Nenana Wellness Coalition
May 29, 2018
The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, masticate and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana Alaska.
This week we had Virginia Young, Bonnie Reed, Derek Ketzler, Michael Clifford, Joshua Verhagen, Amie Verhagen with their two boys and Magen Spencer. We enjoyed break casserole, cheese with crackers and assorted nuts.
WELCOME and READING OF MISSION STATEMENT: By this week’s chairperson: Derek Ketzler
SPIRITUAL MOMENT: Joshua Verhagen
PRESENTATION OF AGENDA AND CALL FOR MODIFICATIONS:
MINUTES: The minutes generated last week were posted at the WIN link at www.railbelt.org and submitted electronically to the WIN e-list.
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS:
Prevention Carnival – June 30, 2018 at the ballpark
Envisioning Wellness Amie Verhagen is willing to do another presentation. Amie is on the committee for the school about international storytelling where the students show their personal stories. The committee was thinking of showcasing the videos at the school during the fall time of 2018.
Joshua Verhagen may be able to get his old professor from last year to do a presentation on handling local issues locally opposed to have another entity from a foreign area to fix the problems. There is a new magistrate named Jeff Mate. Joshua talked to the new Nenana magistrate about the local issues and speaking to him about potentially implementing the “peacemaking” approach in rural areas.
WELLESS THOUGHT: “You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this things that we call “failure” is not the falling down, but the staying down.”
- Mary Pickford

Michael: Excited to be out of school and start soccer tomorrow in Fairbanks.
Joshua: Things have been overwhelming at the city. The financial situation is just too much for just one person to handle. Nenana is used to one executive authority but it’s not very effective and it not going to get Nenana out of the situation. There are 5 people on the council but they need 6 to fully run as a council. Rob Bennet, Lindy White, Joshua Verhagen and Kat McElroy. Roger retires Thursday, May 31, 2018, so they are looking for another person to run water and sewer. If the city does not hire someone within Thursday the city will shut down the water and sewer in Nenana. The city owes the Railroad over $300,000, the Railroad has not been paid since 2012. The city has the option to terminate the contract but everything from the railroad to the water will belong back to the railroad.
Virginia: Joshua is curious if the Farmers Market will be able to hold the farmers market outside near the highway. Nobody has applied for the Market Manager position through the Nenana Native Council. The position entails setting up, taking down, clean-up, advertising and collecting fees. This is a seasonal position.
Derek: No announcements
Magen: T-Ball/Baseball sign up Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 6:00pm at the baseball field. All ages welcome! Will go over introductions, scheduling and gear. Any questions contact Brianna Ketzler.
