Nenana Wellness Coalition

The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, masticate and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana
This week we had 10 participants, Magen Spencer, Derek Ketzler, Mary Alexander, Laura Hokenson, Bonnie Reed, Nikki Saxton, Tom Saxton, Maryellen Robinson and Rose Allen. We enjoyed chicken pot pie casserole, cheese with crackers, and assorted nuts.

Introduction of Guests
Health Fair – The health fair is still looking for volunteers. All volunteers need to sign up at the website at https://alaskahealthfair.org/become-a-volunteer/. The health fair started at 8am for blood draws and exhibits open at 9am until 1pm. There will be food provided and there is a masseuse as well this year.
Choose Respect – The choose respect march for domestic violence and sexual assault will be meeting at the school gymnasium at 11:30pm on March 24, 2018. New T-Shirts will be passed out! At 6:00pm is the Choose Respect Potluck, everyone is encouraged to come and bring a traditional dish! At the dinner there will be an award ceremony recognizing local helpers. Two of these local supports are Uncle Moe and Ernie. There are two basketballs at the Coghill’s store that previous and present basketball players are encouraged to sign. These basketballs will be handed to them during the ceremony.
Paper Tigers – March 30, 2018 at 6:00pm there will be a showing of the movie Paper Tigers. This movie is about a school in Washington that completely changed the way they worked with children with Adverse Childhood Effects (ACES). This movie is about “troubled teenagers,” so there are some “colorful” language. This movie is not appropriate for younger children.

Derek: Bingo for Books is March 29, 2018 at the school pit starting at 5:30 – 7:00.
The EMT 1 class is looking for volunteers to play “dummies.” These volunteer will play a role and the class will help the fake injury.
Magen: Derek and Magen have set their wedding date to July 6, 2019!
Mary: Yoga is on Monday at 10am at the Neda Lord Senior Center.
Bonnie: Nenana Native Council Meeting March 21, 2018 at 6:30 in the Nenana Recreational Center Multi-Purpose Room.
Nenana Health Fair is March 24, 2018.
March 26, 2018 is Choose Respect.
March 30, 2018 is the Easter lunch at the Senior Center.
Rose: Finishing grants for RMHA.
Laura: Just working on the health fair stuff.
Virginia: March 24, 2018 is the Jesse Holmes banquet dinner at the Tribal Hall.
Starting March 27, 2018 the Nenana Native Council will start having seeds. Anyone can come over to the Native Council and get seeds for free, it is welcome for everyone.
Maryellen: Nationwide Kick Butts Day is March 21, 2018 at the school. The youth in the tobacco coalition will go into elementary classroom and talk about the dangers of smoking. Then there will be games and educational handouts for junior high and high school.
There is a new hire for the tobacco coordinator in Healy!
Mike/Nikki: Enjoying their stay and always look forward to participating in community events.
