The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, masticate and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana
This week we had 7 participants: Magen Spencer, Ron Gherman, Derek Ketzler, Bonnie Reed, Virginia Young, Rose Allen and Tim Horn. We enjoyed shrimp Alfred, green salad, assorted nuts and cheese with crackers.

Introduction of Guests: No Guests
Ron Ghernman spoke about the school’s plan to revise their crisis plan. He would like to add earth quake’s into the crisis plan and have staff and students learn what the proper procedure will be when an earth quake happens at school. October 19, 2017 there is state wide earth quake education to discuss safety. The school will be participating in this event. It starts at 10:19am. Every Friday between 2:15 to 2:30 teachers will start a course called Teacher Wellness. This course will help bring support and encouragement to the teachers as well as learning about self-care. Parent teacher conferences are September 27 and September 28. All parents are encouraged to come and speak with the staff. School pictures are September 27, 2017 in the pit. Children should have a packet to bring home to the parents so the parent can fill the form out and bring to school, also, there is an online website to fill out the form online and pay. Eric Filiaridi is the head of a grant called Digital Storytelling. This grant is designed to bring community members and students together through stories. October 26, 2017 there will be a preview of examples of movies the school would like to make as well as a potluck. The stories they would like to talk about are empowering stories of community members who overcame suicide, addiction, mental illness, etc. and show it to the students, who ultimately who end up making their own digital story telling video.
Hannah Filarido popped in to announce and pass out flyers when the Coffee House Performance Night is and to tell everyone that Yoga will start back up next week at 10am at the Neda Lord Center.

Magen: September 25 – September 29 will be in Bethel for school. October 9 – October 13 Magen will be Anchorage for a tobacco summit training. November 2 – November 4 she will be in Anchorage for Alcohol Drug Informational School and November 18 – November 30 she will be in Hawaii for vacation. In those dates she will not be available to cook for win or take minutes. Any WIN members who would like to cook and take minutes is encouraged to do so.
Virginia: Nenana Native Council employee Brianna Ketzler is working as the Activities Director at the local Recreational Center. She has been sending out donation letters to local businesses explaining what the Rec Center does and how donated money will help create more activities in the community. The City Council meeting discussed a proposal called Nenana Lagoon Recreational Area. This proposal talks about creating a river side trail between 10th street and the Tanana River. Also, the proposal is to have three lagoons where people can swim in.
Tim: Isaiah Tommy’s tea and get together is Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at the tribal hall. His funeral will be September 20, 2017 at the tribal hall at 12, the potlatch will be that same evening. Youth night is still every Wednesday night at 6pm, all ages between 13 and 25 are welcome to join at Tim’s house. Children’s class is now every Friday after school, Virginia will pick the kids up at school and bring them to Tim Horn’s house. The Bishop Potlatch is Sunday September 23, 2017 at 2:00pm. The Coffee House Performance Night is September 23, 2017 at 7pm in the pit at the school. October 3rd is the local elections. The Nenana Book Club is now reading The Train now Departing. Joe Forness contacted Tim and set up a date to watch the Narcan presentation and do a CPR for civilians on October 17, 2017. This WIN presentation will be held at the Nenana Fire Department. Amie Verhagen is in Utah visiting her family, she will not be able to do the presentation when it was previously scheduled, so she will reschedule. The Baha’i 200 anniversary is in October. The Bahia’s in Nenana are celebrating at the Rec Center Conference room October 22, 2017 at 2pm. There will be a potluck and then a presentation of the movie of the founder of Bahia’s life. October 27, 2017 there will be another showing of the movie tentatively at Virginia Young’s house.
September 27, 2017 there will be flu shots being administered at the senior center, the same day the food boxes will be ready for pick up.
