Nenana Wellness Coalition


March 21, 2017


The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, masticate and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana Alaska.




WELCOME and READING OF MISSION STATEMENT: By this week’s chairperson:  Laura Hokenson started the meeting at 12:20 after a lunch of Irish stew, cheese and crackers and nuts and raisins.

There were 7 coalition members in attendance:  Bonnie Reed, Natalie Chong, Laura Hokenson, Miles Martin, Kat McElroy, David Poppe and Rosemary Allen


SPIRITUAL MOMENT: Bonnie Reed said a prayer to start the meeting


PRESENTATION OF AGENDA AND CALL FOR MODIFICATIONS: Natalie Chong added Community Service to the agenda.

MINUTES: The minutes generated last week were posted at the WIN link at and submitted electronically to the WIN e-list.


INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS:  There are no guests this meeting.


SPEAKERS/TOPICS:  Health Fair:  Laura reported that Jeanne and Tim are both ill and not sure that they will be able to attend the Health Fair.

Laura said everything is set up and she received the banners announcing the fair and would hang them today.

Natalie reported that she did not know of any students who would be having a table at the Health Fair, but her 7th and 8th grade students will make brochures on health topics to hand out. They will pick the topics of the brochures today.

Miles expressed interest on having a table to present healthy food, gardening, how to start your plants, and using earth worms.

Laura reported on the door prizes that we have received from various business and local people. Kat will bring a ham to donate as a prize and Miles offered to bring door prizes as well.

Kat will be cooking for the Health Fair as she has in the past.


Community Service: Natalie is working with the Anchor group at the school to do a community service project. The students are going to deliver wood to elders and needs more downed trees to cut into logs and split so they can be bundled and delivered. She is looking for volunteers who will help with chain saws, and suggestions on where to get the logs. Several suggestions were offered and Natalie will follow up next week.

WELLNESS THOUGHT:  No one has ever become poor by giving.

David Poppe updated us on the Nenana Urban Farm. He said although there were many trials this winter the animals are alive and bigger. They will soon have them butchered and have fresh farm fed meat for sale.

Kat McElroy: Kat reports that she is enjoying retirement and having a shift to do only what she wants to do. David and Kat are exploring the idea of taking an extended road trip around the lower 48. They will first need to make changes on the farm.

Miles Martin: Miles reported that that there was a Cultural Center meeting yesterday, March 20, and that Brent Mitchell and his wife were hired to manage the center. The plan is to open Memorial Day.

Bonnie Reed:  The Freecycle has been cancelled due to illness.

March 26- Mike Stevens will be at the school to teach harmonica to the student between 11:30-2:30. He will also visit the living center after school.

March 23 is the city council meeting

March 29- Food boxes delivered to Senior Center pick up between 12:-1:00

March 31 is the Health Fair.

Rosemary Allen: RMHA will have a table at the Health Fair. We will be talking to the youth about what healthy choices.

Laura Hokenson: Laura reported that her husband and 1 year old son were chased by a moose and her calf while her husband was skiing and pulling the baby behind him in a sled. They has to abandon the skis and run to a nearby house for protection. Laura came and picked them up in her car and all were safely delivered home.
