Nenana Wellness Coalition

The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, masticate and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana Alaska.
We had 6 participants today. Natalie Chong, Derek Ketzler, Laura Hokenson, Bonnie Reed, Magen Spencer, Tim Horn. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch Natalie’s sister kindly prepared for us. It was spaghetti with sauce and turkey meatballs. Bonnie brought cheese and crackers and raisons pecan mix. .

MINUTES: The minutes generated last week were posted at the WIN link at www.railbelt.org and submitted electronically to the WIN e-list.

Magen printed out the link that Natalie sent the WIN group. The link has the updated place’s where you can take your recyclables in Fairbanks and what places accept which ones. The website is http://iagreenstar.org/fairbanks-recycling-guide/.
Natalie discussed Anchor Café and what it is. Anchor Café is a group of supportive anchors in the community who want to work with the youth and adults to help the community. They are wanting to do a service project every month. The first service project they are thinking of doing is helping out elders. They have some ideas but nothing set in stone. They are having a meeting today at 3:20-4:30 at the school. There will be a potato bar, so come one, come all!
The Nenana Invitation Tournament is this upcoming weekend, it will be held Thursday, February 2 – Saturday, February 4. Nenana girls play Thursday at 6:30 against Fort Yukon and Nenana boys play 8:00 against Tri-Valley.

Magen: The domestic violence/ sexual assault training was last week, Wednesday – Friday. Magen said it was more of a leadership training, but she received tons of good information and great connections. She was able to get some fantastic resources to hopefully bring back to Nenana. She is wanting to contact Vicky Moyle and see if she can bring a group of youth to the Senior Center lunches and have them get to know each other.
Derek: Rondel’s memorial dog mushing competition starts Friday, February 6, 2017, at noon, and the dog mushers should start coming back the following day, to Nenana from Minto around 1:00 pm. His potluck will be at 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2017. There are still tickets available to purchase to help support his family. They cost $10 and will be placed in a raffle to potentially win 100 gallons of gasoline. A house fire in Healy consumed the Stevenson’s family home, they have lost everything. Marilyn posted on Facebook that the store is accepting clothes donations to provide the family. The husband works at the Nenana city office as a maintenance worker and has 7 children between the ages of 2-19. Anything provided will be greatly appreciated. They do have a go fund me account, you can donate money. The link is https://www.gofundme.com/stevenson-fire-fund. The Nenana Fire Department has Hazmat training this weekend in Fairbanks. The next Nenana Native Council meeting will be February 21, 2017, at 6:30 pm. The Native Council is looking into developing a language class for the Nenana/Minto dialect.
Tim: The health fair will be held at the school between 9am-1pm. It will be Friday, March 31, 2017. This upcoming Thursday, February 2, 2017, is the book club meeting at Karen Harvey’s house at 7 pm. They are finishing up reading Valley of Promises by Bonnie Leon. Kids Kraft will be Wednesday, February 8, 2017, after school with Karen Harvey. Fort Wain Wright had a meeting in Nenana discussing an archaeological site they believe may be one of the oldest sites in the region.

Annual Senior Center meeting – 02/15/2017 at 12:00, four members terms are up. Bonnie Reed, Endel Moore, Barbara Carson, Nancy Shaw.
Larry and Judie Youngie’s truck, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, was stolen recently so they will be coming back up to Nenana.
Natalie: Natalie has been busy with her school lessons with the elementary students. She and Mr. Jacobsen collaborated a science experiment that also discussed the kid’s anchor in their lives and their web of support. Brittney Starkweather and Natalie are discussing a service project they are wanting to execute in the community.
Laura: The health fair is on a Friday, so they are looking for volunteers the day before, Thursday, to help set up around 2 pm. Any potential exhibitors are going to need to go online and fill out an application, the website is, https://www.tfaforms.com/458436. The next meeting will be Jeannie Bennet’s house at 3:15 this Thursday, February 02, 2017 for the health fair. Natalie created a shared google docs with numerous members about the details of the health fair and school schedule.
