Nenana Wellness Coalition

The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, masticate and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana Alaska.
This week we had 8 members: Rosemary Allen, Bonnie Reed, Mary Alexander, Laura Hokenson, Natalie Chong, Maryellen Robinson, Magen Spencer, and Virginia Young. We had delicious lunch of chicken tortellini, green beans, cheese and crackers, and assorted nuts with raisins.

Recycling in Nenana – was left on the table for further discussion. We discussed how recycling through the Native Council is officially closed. We will continue to bring ideas on how to sustain recycling in Nenana.

Rosemary: No updates, besides mentioning how great the youth play was that focused on tobacco prevention.
Virginia: The Community Safety Pride meeting is this Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 6:30pm at the George Hall.
Magen: Classes are going well, she just finished her math class and only has a couple classes left. At 3:00pm today, she has a meeting with the Lead On students about creating an action plan to implement in the community.
Maryellen: Frank and her presented the tobacco prevention poster contest to the students at Nenana City Public School. The posters will be judged by class groups, Kindergarten – 4th, 5th – 8th, 9th – 12th, however, there will be one grand winner that will win a chrome book computer. The other winners will receive gift cards. The posters are due January 27, 2017 and winners will be announced January 29, 2017. Maryellen has been busy planning Kick Butts Day which is in March and the Alaska Tobacco Control Alliance summit that Lena and a couple more students will be attending.
Bonnie: Ralph Barlet recently passed away.
January 25, 2017 – Doyon meeting explaining the drilling happening this winter @ 6:30
January 30, 2017 – Fortwainwright will be coming to the George hall @ 12:30 the community is invited, further information is needed.
January 27 & 28, 2017 – Nenana Lynx Basketball teams will be playing against Cordova.
Natalie: Natalie has been overwhelmed about the stress of starting over in Oregon. We are sending her prayers and positive vibes.
Mary: Mary had a close friend of hers pass away, Dick McCreedy, she told us about the good memories they shared together. He will be greatly missed by her.
Laura: Laura is going to Anchorage for the next couple days with her husband and son.
