Nenana Wellness Coalition
December 29, 2015
The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, masticate and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana Alaska.
We had seven participants today: Kat & Leon McElroy, Bonnie Reed, Tara, Virginia Young, David Poppe and Tim Horn. We enjoyed chicken wild rice soup, mixed green salad, kimchee, raisins with pecans, and Ritz crackers with sliced cheese for lunch.
WELCOME and READING OF MISSION STATEMENT: By this week’s chairperson, Bonnie Reed.
SPIRITUAL MOMENT: Tara led us in holding hands and contemplated, then she sang a circle song.
PRESENTATION OF AGENDA AND CALL FOR MODIFICATIONS: There were no modifications to the agenda.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes generated last week, posted on the WIN link at http://www.railbelt.org . They were emailed this morning to everyone on the WIN list, after apparently not going out last week. Sorry gang.
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS: No new guests this week.
New Year’s Eve Celebration: This is scheduled to begin at 6 PM, on Thursday, December 31st, at the tribal hall. Moose soup is being provided. Everyone is invited to bring a side dish for pot luck. There will be music. Fireworks are scheduled for midnight. There was some discussion in regards to the tradition of firing off rifles over the river as a safety issue.
Mayoral Candidate Forum: The Friends of the Library have taken lead on this project. After some juggling to accommodate schedules, the Forum will be held January 7th, at 7 PM, at the tribal hall. The four mayoral candidates have been invited. Ten questions have been formulated by those submitted electronically to the web site and in written form to the library by members of the public. These questions will be provided to each of the participating candidates in advance. Time has been allotted to allow for brief opening and closing remarks by each of the candidates. All members of the community are encouraged to attend the event. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19th and will be held as usual at the Civic Center.
WELLNESS THOUGHT: Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something. Henry David Thoreau
Leon: Plans to be here until he returns to Job Corps in Palmer January 6th.
Kat: All quiet at Railbelt. Tonight the EMS/Fire Department volunteers are having their annual pot luck dinner and White Elephant gift exchange, 6 PM, at the fire hall.
Tara: Nenana is a Good Place to live.
Bonnie: December 31st is a Baha’i feast day; we had a bit of a discussion of how Bonnie came to be in Alaska when Tim was just a toddler.
David: He brought the female pigs into town. They were going into first heat and are too young yet to be bred. He has been talking to Jerry Marlowe at MidState Meats who has raised pigs for 40 years in the Interior. Is looking into possible purchase of additional acreage; questions his own sanity.
Tim: The Nenana Book Club is reading The Strangler Vine, a mystery that takes place in India. Presumably the book club meets this Monday evening, January 4, 7 PM.
ADJOURNMENT: 1:50 PM
