The Nenana Wellness Coalition is an alliance of representatives from various organizations, government agencies, community groups and individuals that meets weekly to discuss, evaluate, coordinate, consolidate, celebrate, and help implement plans for improving the wellness and quality of life in Nenana Alaska.
There were 7 in attendance today, including: Kat McElroy, Jessica Durtsche, Bonnie Reed, Virginia Young, David Poppe, Tara and Tim Horn. We enjoyed baked salmon strips with brown rice, mixed green salad, Ritz crackers with sliced cheese and raisins and pecans for lunch.
WELCOME followed by the READING OF MISSION STATEMENT, by this week’s chair-person: Bonnie Reed
PRAYER was led Kat McElroy, followed by the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE
PRESENTATION OF AGENDA AND CALL FOR MODIFICATIONS: There was no agenda presented today due to computer issues.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes were posted at the WIN link at http://www.railbelt.org and submitted electronically to the WIN e-list.
INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS: No new guests today
Tara said she wanted to talk about Global Warming. She saw photographs of the North Pole. The ice is all melted. She wonders what will we do, locally, what this means for us, how will it affect us? How should we respond? There was a way lively discussion. It was agreed that the topic bears revisiting.
We have Patty McKenna next week to finish viewing The Weight of the Nation HBO series. Tim has made a flyer; Kat will print and Jessica will hang them up.
WELLNESS THOUGHT: What? Me worry?????????????????
Virginia: Was part of the farm tour by the Peony Growers Association Friday. She feels it went well. She got some good feedback. One of the operations in Fairbanks is in the process of planting 25,000 roots. Her oldest daughter will be having a baby in January; she is starting a blanket for the baby.
Tim: Talked to Michelle and got an okay for us to use NSLC next week for WIN tho they will have some students arriving early for soccer. The following week maybe we can use the Meda Lord great room.
Softball practice Monday and Wednesday evening, 7 PM, at the baseball field.
The next book club meeting will be Monday, August 6th, 7 PM at Karen Harvey’s house. They are reading The Great Bridge.
Lastly, she understands Miles can get letters and subscriptions, she wonders if there is any way we could get WIN minutes to him. Tara is looking it up.
Tara: Is getting an A in her Foundations of Social Work class, got a B in biology. She built a small rental cabin and now wants to build a small dome on her Fairbanks property so she can get electric to the cabin.
David: New calf, her name is Rose. She was born of Gwennie. He is convinced summer is the best time for calving. She is sturdy and vigorous.
Kat: Dancing in the Streets is tentatively scheduled for September 13th; Mike Anderson has agreed to roast a pig for our event.
Jessica: She and Virginia made a trip to the city office to check out income/outgo for the EMS towards the goal of helping to find funding for emergency services operations. Virginia is going to parse the budget so it will be easier to read. It was suggested that we get Joe to come talk to us about what support he feels is needed.
Bonnie: Thursday, August 1st, there will be a community lunch at the tribal hall. Interior Regional Housing Authority will be there to answer questions.
At five PM there will be a meal out at the fish camp along the river.
Then at 6:30 PM is Game Night at Meda Lord senior housing.
August 2nd is our Freecycle, at the RV Park, 5:30 PM.
